I went to turn on the surface lights that light up the stove below and I got a loud and bright “pop”. It was not the normal lights burning out kind “pop”. Now the surface lights do not work, the interior light does not come on, the turn table does not work, the vent does not open and turn on.

The control pad still works, clock (can change the time), I can even turn on the microwave and it still heats. But without the vent and turntable working, we don’t use it because it “superheats” and it just doesn’t seem safe.

Another tech on another paid site, told me it was the control board that has gone bad. I assume that is the same as the smart board. Do you agree?? I consider myself pretty handy at appliance repair, but the high voltage in a microwave scares me a little. Can I replace the smart board myself and how do I access the smart board?

Sorry for the delay.

Sounds like the problem is a bad control board, aka a smart board (#14 on the diagram). In order to access it you have to remove the vent grille and open the control panel. Do not forget to unplug the power cord. As soon as you open the control panel, you have to discharge the high voltage capacitor.
