Lights out! Control Board, cntrl-elec, other?

I tried replacing a bulb on the refrigerator side (one of the two sockets in the control box), but heard a loud zap when I made contact. My fridge went 100% dark: all bulbs (fridge & freezer) are dark, and the digital read-outs on the control box are out. As well, the dispenser lights are out AND the dispenser does not work.

Both freezer & fridge are holding what appear to be correct temperature. This happened 24 hours ago, and the ice maker provided new ice sometime today. I can’t confirm fridge temperature, but the milk is cold and drinkable.

I’m not knowledgeable about appliance service whatsoever. How do I know if I should order a new control box ($335) or a new cntrl-elec ($50)…or both? My gut is that I blew some sort of fuse by not unplugging the unit (or cutting off at the fuse box), but of course I really have no idea.

I can’t get a service appt for 1 week but am hosting Thanksgiving. The unit appears to keep working temperature inside, but i’d be a hero if i could fix the lights, digital temperature controls on the control box and the dispenser functionality. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

Garson,

Sounds like you blew the door switch circuit, on the main control board(located in the compressor compartment in the back of refrigerator, inside the plastic box against the outer wall).

AP4411082

If you have a multi meter, you can check for 120 volts ac on the blue with yellow striped wire on the 5 pin connector on the control board, to any white wire on the board, no voltage out, the circuit is blown and you’ll need the control board.

This circuit feeds the 120VAC to the door switches, and a secondary circuit (yellow wire on 7 pin connector)feeds the display board 120 vac, when the refrigerator door is open.

Remember, this is a live voltage test , so be careful,

Good Luck,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I’ve no idea the difference between the two different Cntrl-Elec parts, but I am curious and wanted to ask a follow-up question and confirm I buy the correct “Cntrl-Elec”.

I created this total black-out / dispenser-failure while trying to replace one of the two bulbs in the refrigerator-side Control Box. I assumed I fried the Control Box Cntrl-Elec # AP3773712, out of ignorant/naïve cause & effect.

My questions: what does this Control Box Cntrl-Elec AP3773712 do?

I think I understand your reply; the Unit Parts Cntrl-Elec Part number: AP4411082 ensures electrical power to the doors (non-technical perspective)? If so, it means the unit doesn’t receive a signal to turn on the lights when the freezer/fridge door opens, and also the unit cannot read the signal that service (water/ice) is being requested?

Again, I’m just curious…not trying to be a pain. Many thanks.

Garson,

Your refrigerator has two control boards :
(I’ll be using different terminology, and hope it helps)

AP3773712 - Is a "User interface/display board, This board is used for setting the desired temperatures and options available on the unit and has you’re display for temperatures, and is located in the control panel in the refrigerator.

AP441082 - Is a “Machine Control Board”, or power distribution board.
It basically tells the refrigerator what to do, by the inputs from the U/I board, and other components in the system.
(Temps, when to run the compressor, when to defrost, when to light the interior lights, etc.).

In your particular case,

When you were replacing the light bulb, with power on and the door open,
you had a constant, 120 VAC at the bulb socket, and caused a voltage “spike” or surge on the circuit and most likely shorted the “mini relay” for the door light circuit.

Based on your information, I’m relatively sure that your User Interface board is OK, as is your machine control board, because you stated everything is working except the dispenser, display, and interior lights.

Unfortunately, in order to activate the ligts and the display, etc. you’ll need the machine control board. Ap4411082.

As I stated in the previous post, you have 120VAC going to the door light switches(blue/yellow wire), with the door closed the switches are an open circuit, lights are off, display is off(the dispenser has a different configured door switch, so that the dispenser works on the freezer door).

When you open the door, the door switch closes, sends 120 VAC (on the yellow wire) back to the machine control board, the relay closes on the board, and sends voltage out to the display board , to illuminate the display, and the interior lights come on, because you’ve completed the circuit to the bulb on the blue/yellow wire.

So , with no 120VAC coming out of the machine control board, because of a damaged relay, there will be no display, no interior lights, and no dispenser display.

Hope this helps you understand better,

Good Luck,

Joe & App Team…can’t thank you enough. You guys are unbelievable to be able to diagnose my problem online (at least it seems amazing to me).

It was the main control board – and specifically on the main control board I could easily see the fried little portion of the overall board that was shot. I had a little trouble finding this part…it sits behind a large plastic box that I had assumed to be the housing. In fact, I had to look carefully after taking the large plastic box out of the fridge to see the thin little board flush against the wall.

Thanks again, I was lost without finding this board (and Joe).
