From what it looks and sounds like, the ice maker motor has a skipping gear that is preventing it from twisting any ice out. This may just be an ice maker failure but we can do some checks to make sure. Does the tray feel like it has any ice in it? LG AEQ73449909 Ice Maker Assembly (AP7205674) - AppliancePartsPros.com

Yes, the tray has ice in it. Since I last posted, it was producing a decent amount of craft ice. The problem is semi-intermittent. It just did the popping again though and there are 3 craft ice balls in the tray.

On the bottom of the ice maker is a test button that can be pressed. If you press it, then gently help the tray release the ice, does it look like the ice is larger than normal? Is there anything in the tray that might indicate damage? If not, then it is an intermittent failure with the ice release heater caused by the control in the motor module of the ice maker. If the ice looks larger than normal, it may be from a different cause. Here is a link to the icemaker your model should use in the freezer. AEQ73449909 Ice Maker Assembly | Genuine LG OEM In Stock
