Kitchenaid Whisper Quiet + troubleshooting

Brand:Kitchenaid
Model Number:KUDP02CRBS4
Main Symptom:grinding / straining noise when cycle starts
What happens & when: Whenever i start the dishwasher cycle as the water start being pushed into the machine the straining sounds start as well. i guess it could also be described as grinding. I think I have a decent idea on what needs to be done - replace motor and pump, but trying getting a sanity check nonetheless. Uploading a recording of the sound with the post.

TIA.

Error Code (if any):
Parts or tests already tried: i have already tried an empty cycle and same sound.

Loud grinding during Start Up

Check:

  1. Food chopper (food grinder) blade

    • Broken blade

    • Loose blade

    • Debris wrapped around blade

  2. Chopper screen

    • Broken screen allowing large debris into the pump

    • Glass or hard objects trapped against the chopper

  3. Impeller area behind the chopper cover

    • Glass shards

    • Fruit pits

    • Bone fragments

    • Plastic pieces

  4. Wash pump impeller

    • Damaged or missing fins

    • Impeller rubbing housing

  5. Circulation motor bearings

    • Growling/grinding that continues throughout the wash cycle

Access

  • Remove lower rack.

  • Remove lower spray arm.

  • Remove accumulator/filter cover.

  • Remove chopper cover (Torx screws).

  • Inspect the chopper blade and screen before condemning the circulation motor.

On this Whirlpool-built KitchenAid design, a piece of glass caught in the food chopper is one of the most common causes of a sudden loud grinding noise, especially if the unit was previously running quietly and still cleans reasonably well. If the chopper area is clear and the noise sounds like a continuous growl, the circulation motor becomes the primary suspect

Thanks. removed the impeller blade and screen and cleaned them. there was soft buildup around it and the spring - likely paper from labels forgotten but nothing else. i did notice the rubber seal was pretty worn out. I also removed the motor from the body and there is a lot of desposits / residue. see pic.

Replaced pump motor and filter assembly and seems to have helped. Not back to original quiet sounds that i was used to but definitely eliminated the grinding / growling sounds. i will take the win.
