Kitchenaid side by side not cooling, compressor shutting off intermittently

Brand:kitchenaid
Model Number:ksrg25fvmt00
Main Symptom:freezer warm and fridge warm
What happens & when: the veggie tree had been freezing and then one day the Ice started melting. I woke up the other morning and there was water dripping out of the ice dispenser. I unplugged it and vacuumed out the underneath a little bit and plugged it back in and the fan and compressor came back on. It cold and started making ice again and was working fine and then started having the same problem about 8 hours later. This model doesn’t have a defrost timer I think it works off of a default defrost computer board. I was thinking it could be the fan and the freezer not working and that’s why the veggies in the bottom of the refrigerator were freezing for the return vent was blocked so I made sure to keep the area around the return vent open. It seemed to fix it for a while but had the same problem that evening. I woke up this morning with the same issue the ice had melted overnight. The compressor and fan were off so unplugged it for about 10 minutes and plugged it back in and it came back on.

If the fans continue to run but the compressor does not, the compressor start relay should be checked as a possible cause.

A couple of easy checks:

  • When the compressor shuts off, listen for a clicking sound near the compressor.

  • With the power cord unplugged, remove the start relay from the compressor and do a shake test.

    • If it sounds like rocks rattling around inside, the relay is usually bad.

The relay can also be tested with a multimeter:

  • Use the continuity setting, or

  • Set the meter to the lowest Ohms range if continuity is not available.

However, if the fans and compressor both shut off together, try turning the thermostat to the coldest setting:

  • If everything kicks back on, the thermostat may be sticking.

  • If nothing starts back up, it’s possible the defrost control is hanging up in a defrost cycle.
