Brand: KitchenAid
Model Number: KRSC703HPS00
Main Symptom: freezer lights & ice maker stopped working
What happens & when:
6 months ago, some (not all) of the interior lights on the freezer side started flickering, then just stopped working completely. There are 3 lights in the freezer that I know of: one on the roof, one on the left side center height near the front of the freezer compartment, and one inside the icemaker. The only one that currently works is in the icemaker.
There is a door switch up top (roof) and that appears to be working, when toggled with door open the ice maker light turns on/off.
About the same time as the lights started to go haywire, the icemaker just stopped working. So I don’t know if these are somehow related?
Is it possible the switch had a partial failure and it still working for the light in the icemaker, but won’t tell the icemaker that the door is closed or tell the other interior lights that the door is open? Or is there something between the switch and those devices that has failed?
Wife and kids have been bugging me for MONTHS to fix this…help!
Additional info - I removed and tested both the main compartment door sensor switch and the ice bin compartment sensor switch and tested both with a multimeter. The contacts are all operating properly, so it’s not the switches.
I partially disassembled the ice maker compartment, nothing seems amiss. Except the Shutoff arm seems to stay in the “up” position all the time. This leads me to believe it is a power issue (no power getting to the icemaker)
After going into diagnostic mode (with the help of a phone tech), I was able to figure out that there are likely 3 concurrent issues going on.
the door switch on freezer is not working fully. It does show that it works on a multimeter, but in diag mode, it doesn’t always show the door as open/closed. When it does actually show the door open, the light doesn’t come on. Wiggling the switch causes one of the 2 freezer lights to flicker a bit, and I was able to get the light to come on and stay on, until I touched the switch again.
the other light (roof) never comes on
trying to run the cycle test on the ice cube tray (harvest cycle, i.e. dumping the cube tray) does not work, it reports an error with the icemaker. Similarly, trying to run the diagnostic cycle for filling the cube tray also does not work, because the first step of that is to put the tray into “home” position, and that doesn’t report any motion because it’s broken.
Ordered new switch and cube maker. Will report back if that fixed it
It sounds like there may be multiple components contributing to these issues.
For the freezer LEDs, the problem could be a short in the top light module. Since the lights are wired in series, a failed top light can cause the others to flicker or act erratically. While a faulty door switch can also cause lighting issues, the top light being completely out points more toward a shorted LED.
The link below includes a repair video in case you’d like to take a closer look at that top freezer light:
As for the ice maker, the symptoms you described do sound like a failing ice maker. Let us know what you find!
Well, that didn’t work. I replaced the main door switch, that only marginally improved the interior side light function. It still doesn’t turn on when you open the door, but if you flick the switch, it turns on. Also if it is off, and you wiggle it sideways, the light will flicker (same as the old switch).
The icemaker still does not work. I ran through the test process and it is showing a faulty motor or switch. But what switch?
The interior top light still does not work. So now I’m wondering if this is all related to a main circuit board, which was my original thought.
Not happy. But my microwave turntable works now (also ordered that part at the same time) and I have a spare icemaker now.
