Dishwasher fills and drains, but water is not spraying from the upper or lower arm. Dishwasher is normally very quiet, but it seems to make all the sounds it normally does (and no extras). When ‘clean’ led is on, the water has drained, dishes are dirty and dry, soap dispenser is open and soap is just running down the inside of the door. If I open the door a few minutes into the cycle, there is water in the bottom (higher than heating element - is this ok?). So it seems to fill and drain. From what I’ve read it may be an impeller problem. (dishes are always rinsed before putting them in, so I doubt there is a clog). Can you tell me how to test whether the impeller is doing what it is supposed to be doing? Dishwasher is about 3-4 years old and has been used once a week.
Hi Steven,
Most likely the problem is a stuck wash pump. You have to replace the pump & motor assembly in order to fix it.
You can find the complete instructions in the tech sheets.
- The part number for the pump & motor assembly is AP3179651

You may have a clogged chopper screen. Pull the torq screws off the filter assembly and remove the half round pump cover. If the chopper screen is clogged, replace both the chopper and check valve next to it. Check valve AP3152971, chopper AP3039186.
I took it apart and it seems to be fixed. First I rotated the motor and it seemed stuck in one direction - until turning it in the other direction. Poured some water in the tub and started it up - this time the motor turned and the spray arms were working - but it sounded like the motor was munching on a bearing so I drained it and took it apart. The trouble seems have have been a bead of glass stuck between the metal screen and motor blades (chopping blades?) - it fell out as I was cutting up my hands taking this thing apart. I’m not sure how it got in there - the screen above the impeller has no holes in it. But…good news is that it is working again. Thanks.
We are glad you were able to fix it.

I had the same problem, and from the same cause. A piece of glass chipped from a dish had fallen down into the food chopper. This video helped me disassemble my KitchenAid KUDS40FVWH3 dishwasher to remove the broken glass: (you need to type this yourself)
