KitchenAid Dishwasher door pops open

Second time dealing with door popping open issue with this KitchenAid dishwasher. Repair diagnosis directed me to purchasing a new door latch which I bought from your site. This has not solved the problem. The door won’t stay latched with or without the machine running. When repaired the first time it was under warrantee and all the technician did was fool around with the strike, bending it down to create more pressure on the latch. I tried this also but can’t get it to hold in any position. For a high end machine this is such a rinky dink mechanism. I can’t believe this is the best that KichenAid can come up. Do you have any ideas on what to do next.

Hopefully this Service pointer will help.

Which of these parts are you referring to?

I’m not referring to any parts so far. I’m just trying to point you in the right direction. Not much can be done remotely and you are the only our eyes and hands.

Gene…can you provide instructions on how to replace the strike?

What is the complete model number of your dishwasher?

Gene,

The model number is KUDS01FLSS6

Thanks,

Hi Peter,

You would need to pull the dishwasher out of the cabinet for about 10". The strike is located on top of the tub. The latch strike retainer brackets are snapped into the metal ridge on which the cabinet seal is installed.

I have purchased the strike and will attempt the install. If it solves the problem it will have been worth the effort. Thank you for your continuing assistance.

Hello Gene,

I installed the new strike tonight and we’ll run the dishwasher tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted; wish me luck!

Hello Gene,

I’m disappointed to inform that replacing the latch and strike did not fix the dishwasher door from opening during wash cycle.

Any final suggestions before I call for repair service?

Best Regards,
Peter F.

I’m surprised but happy to report that the door is now staying closed through several washing cycles! During the first few cycles we literally stood in front of the door to keep it closed while washing, and then we wedged a step stool to do the same. After 4-5 cycles run this way the door stayed closed on its own, and now I consider the repair a success! The only conclusion I can come to is that the heat from those first cycles might have “tempered” the new strike that I installed and caused it to stiffen and hold to the latch.
