I have a ten year old Kenmore 80 series washer (model 11020802990) that started making a grinding noise while spinning. Water drained, but clothes were coming out still soaked at the end of the cycle. Now it is only making the grinding noise and will not spin.
I have no problem replacing parts, just not sure where to start.
I initially checked the drain pump for blockage and found none. Not sure if I should replace the clutch, motor coupling or something else next. Is there a way to determine if those parts are worn/damaged?
There are a couple of things you need to check. First would be the drive block, check if the grooves are in tacked and the spin tube is engaging the drive block. Removal of the agitator is required.
Look for worn out break pads in the clutch and basket drive, also check the bottom portion of the basket drive. Put the clutch and transmissiion back, bypass the lid switch and turn the washer to spin.
Check if the silver color cup (clutch portion mounted on the top of the transmission) is rotating.
If it is - the clutch is bad.
If not - the transmission is, part number AP3096209
