Kenmore Model 80 vs Model 90 differences

I have an older Model 80 with a bad motor and quite possibly clutch. What is the difference between a Kenmore Model 80 and a Kenmore Model 90 Washer?

Cosmetics and marketing. There are many different individual model numbers among both 80 and 90 series. You would need the exact model number of each to be able to compare features. They are both Whirlpool made direct drive designs.

Looking for a good used replacement washer. Wife claims she’s gotta have a Model 90 cause they gotta be 10 points better than a Model 80 right??? I figure the more knobs on it the better its gotta be.

Nope, doesn’t work that way. See photo. First pic is 80 series with 3 knobs, second one is 80 series with 5 knobs, last one is 90 series. Looks almost same as 80 series. Slight differences in appearance and labeling but essentially the same washer. You have to have the exact model numbers to be able to look up the parts list’s or marketing brochures to be able to find any differences such as stainless tub versus plastic, fabric softener dispenser or not, load capacity…etc. As far as drive train, suspension and basic design, they are the same. That’s why when people post about their “80 series” washer, we ask for the model number. “80 series” doesn’t really mean anything other than a marketing thing.

I’m going to assume that the 2 speed motor was only used when the machine had the “SPEEDS” knob??? Also wife claims they had a 3 speed machine. I don’t think so but thought I’d ask.
Thanks, Dennis

Nope, doesn’t mean that. Washer may have 2 speed motor with speed selection done by timer cycle selection instead of speed switch. Got to have model number to know for sure. There are 3 speed motors, in fact, the 2nd and 3rd in the photo are 3 speed washers. Extra slow, slow and fast on the speed switch.
