Kenmore Freezer issue

Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 795.72493.610
Main Symptom: Intermittent issue
What happens & when:

Will get get down to 0° and at some point stop getting below 42°, fridge will run slightly warmer as well and it will make ice until it stops getting below freezing. I’m an hvac tech so I know to check fans and temp sensors and coils. But I haven’t been able to catch it going into defrost but it is not freezing solid. Just don’t know much about small units like this so any help would be much appreciated.

If the coils aren’t heavily icing over and the fans are working I’d check the defrost circuit to make sure the heater is reading about 34-42Ω. If that heater is bad it looks like the only way to get it is with the evap assembly AP6031082. The fact that this comes and goes tells me that the unit is probably trying to go into defrost and is seeing when it hits the proper temperature to judge that defrost has completed, so the temp sensors should be good, but if you want to check them they should read about 30kΩ @ 32°F after sitting in ice water for 5-10 minutes. If that defrost circuit is good you might be looking at the main control board AP5968480.

Thank you much for commenting. I’ll try that today. After finding out LG makes it I’ve been able to come across a bit more info and should be able to mess with it today. So far cycled power and it is currently working (compressor pulling .8a). It did have a 6 code which does mention the PCB board. When I’ll get a chance I’ll mess with the defrost and see what it is reading

Ok I finally caught it in defrost. Noticed compressor and fans weren’t running so I opened it up and defrost element was still hot (like water drops steaming off of it) no ice. Brown to black on the molex connector is reading 36k. Orange is reading OL on molex (which I assume is defrost sensor or do I need to cut into wires?). Reset power and still running in defrost, no ice. Can use test button and everything runs and cools with test 1, goes to test 2, doesn’t go to test 3 just goes back to not running which I assume is defrost.

The black and brown go to the defrost heater, which should read 34-42Ω, the 2 orange wires go to the defrost sensor which should read about 30k at 32°F. I’d double check your readings there. Sounds like the heater is good since it came on. Check that sensor, if you are still getting open it’ll need to be replaced, and it also only comes with the evap assembly. If the heater and sensor are good though you are most likely looking at the main control board.

Ok I’ll check when I get back to the house but I’m pretty sure that was right. I attached a picture to make sure

Yup, that’s the connector you are looking for.

Ok I got the board in Thursday and got it changed. It was working and got down to 20° last night but when I checked it this morning it’s back up to 32° and is now sitting at 34°. I do know it did go into defrost and back out today. What do I need to check now or go back and check?

That’s weird that it isn’t going down to 0 now. Did you happen to recheck the resistance values on the thermistor?
