If I set the control to any setting, the lights work fine. When I push the start button, all I get is a humming sound from inside. It seems to be coming from the lower left. It happened late last night and I did not get a chance to open the unit yet. How do I tell if the motor is bad?

The below is just general info
Try turning the drum by hand, it should turn fairly easily.
Many units do not include a belt break detection switch so there is a possibility that the belt is broken. In this scenario the drum will not rotate but you will have heat.
Open the door
Hold the door switch closed
Push the start button
Rotate the drum in the correct direction
Watch your knuckles in case it starts up
If it starts then odds are high that the motor is toast or totally clogged up with lint
took unit apart some last night. It is the motor humming … belt is good. If I turn the drum the motor will start running, almost like a bad capacitor? Will too much lint cause the motor to not produce enough power? There was definately a coating of lint in there.

Most units do not have a capacitor. I believe most motors fail because the start winding burns out OR the centrifugal switch which switches the start winding in/out of circuit fails OR the mechanical set up in the motor which activates the centrifugal switches fails.
In any case all of the above require replacing the motor on most machines.

No, but it can clog up the centrifugal mechanism or the switch so that the start winding is not in circuit when the armature is not rotating.
Can also cause the motor to overheat but it has to pretty well be clogged solid.
