Kenmore Coldspot compressor is banging

I just bought a house and the fridge was manufactured in January 2001. It cools fine, icemaker works, all is well EXCEPT the thing makes a hollow metallic knocking sound when the compressor shuts off. Sometimes it’s one loud knock, sometimes it’s multiple.

Upon taking off the back panel I was able to see the fan and the compressor housing. To confirm, I watched it after it started up and when the compressor shut off, you could see something inside the housing slammed against the back and shook it.

Can this easily be fixed? I’m not sure how to open the top.

Please view attached photo.

My questions:
Can this be fixed or must it be replaced?
How do I open that housing?
Where can I buy what parts, if necessary?

Thank you so much!

Sounds like a compressor problem, see the following Item 24

Has to be replaced. By the time you pay for the compressor and a tech to install it and recharge the freon, it often makes more sense to replace the unit.

It may last quite a while like this if you can put up with the racket.
Problem is it will usually go when the freezer and fresh food sections are full so I would not tempt fate. Turn it into a beer fridge.

You cannot, it is a sealed system.

You could get them fro AppliancePartsPros even though they do not come up on a search. This is not a job for a DIYer as it requires special tools, guages.

Thanks for the bad news.

I guess it’s best I know this now to make some nice kitchen upgrades a priority over some others.

The seller lucked out with my inspector missing that piece, but who knows – maybe it will last?

That’s BS, I’ve had one that’s been clunking for 20 years.
