Kenmore 70 series will not advance cycles

I have a Kenmore 70 series top load washer; I believe the model number is:

11022712100

The machine cycles will not advance; I have to cycle (all cycles) the load through manually. Will I need to replace the timer?

If so, does this require any special tools?

Does this require any special tricks or skills? I have worked in the construction trades for years and am reasonably adept at working with tools.

I’m having difficulty with the above model number when I browse for parts; the site doesn’t recognize this model. Do I need to add periods/dashes to the number or anything?

Most likely the problem is a bad timer. You have to open the console to access it. Use the first part of the instructions attached to the reply.
