What happens & when:the interior light is out and it looks like it’s a circuit, not a traditional bulb, and no way to get to it. Also, is there a way for the painted exterior commands to be illuminated?

Yes it is small printed circuit board ( LG AEJ74859417 Microwave/Hood Combo Microwave Hood Combo Lamp Holder Assembly | Genuine OEM Part ) with an led on it. Now for the bad new to change it you have to take the microwave down nd take it apart to change the LED, As far as illuminates commands if the LED in the control panel is our you mat need to replace that as well
