Igniters Spark Continuously

I’ve just replaced the igniter module on my Kitchenaid 4-burner gas cooktop. The new module from APP is the Eaton 4454392 which replaced the old igniter, an RV 4173501. I installed the new igniter module carefully following the wiring connections exactly as specified in the installation instructions. With the new module installed, the two rear burners work perfectly. However, when either of the two front burners are turned on they ignite properly but the igniters continue to spark at all four burners. Is there some adjustment required or is the igniter module faulty?

This spark module has a feed back from each of burner igniters and when it senses the flame - it stops sparking.

Most likely you switched around the wires from the front burner igniters and the spark does not receive the right input.

If you turn on both front burners at the same time - does it stop sparking?

If it does, just switch the wires around.

Another thing I’ve recently noticed: If I turn on one of the back burners it ignites properly and the igniter sparking stops. However, if I then turn that burner to its lowest gas setting the sparking starts again.

Is there some requirement to adjust the igniter spark gaps when a new module is installed?

Check the electrical connection to the stove for possible reversed polarity and proper grounding.

Check all burner igniters for any damages (cracked or broken ceramic insulation).

Check all burners for proper assembly. Check if the burner cap is in place on every burner.

Clean all burner igniters, using a rubbing alcohol.

by the way, if the electrodes are in bad shape , have some corrosion, ( give high resistance ) they could be causing the module not to recognize that the gas has ignited and the flame is on..

I’ve got a four burner Thermador cooktop. All four ignitors continuously click whenever the unit is plugged in. Even if a burner is lit, it continues to fire. Right now, it is unplugged and I am using a match to light the burners. Does this call for an ignitor module replacement, or is there a fix?

Hi rlawrence,

In order to provide the most accurate advise I need the complete model number of the cook top. You can find it on th bottom panel.

Post it as a new thread, please.

Hi Gene,
I have the exact same issue; when the unit is plugged in, all 4 burners sparks countinously. KitchenAid Superba Model KGRT507GBL0.
Appreciate any help in locating the part I need to replace.

Thanks,

Bikash

A good place to start would be the burner ignitor switches.
Each burner control has a switch with two wires
going to it. (One at a time) You can remove one wire
from each switch to see if the sparking stops.
If so then you have a shorted burner ignitor switch.
Make sure the metal tip of the wire doesn’t touch
you or ground.

Bikash,

In addition to Glen, another possibility is a spilled liquid or a cleaning stuff could get inside a switch, causing a short. After a few days it drys and stops by itself.

Hi I’m new. I had this problem as well. I have a GE Profile JGP933 gas cooktop. My sister-in-law came and cooked. She proceeded to spill things. After she cleaned it up, all four igniters continued to spark. Eventually they dried out and stopped. However, now one burner won’t spark at all. The gas is ok because I can smell it. What could be the problem?

There’s at least 8 different versions of that model.
We will need the complete number from the model
and serial tag.

Thanks

Oh…where do I find that info?

EDIT: Using the GE website, I’m 99% sure it’s JGP933SEKSS.

With some troubleshooting, I found that the electrode on that burner is fine. When I twist the knob to LITE on any of the other burners to get it sparking, the bad burner will light and I can see it spark.

So the issue is in the knob somewhere. It’s not sending the signal to the igniter…

debaire,

The problem with your stove is a bad ignition switch located under the knob. You can find the complete model on the bottom panel. Look from inside of the cabinet.

Gene, thanks for the input. It’s a cooktop and sits on top of the oven. I believe it’s somehow harnessed to the oven below. I’ve tried to look under the portion I can get up and out and it doesn’t have the necessary information. Is the exact model number necessary? From checking on the GE site, it seems the differences are in color.

It is not possible to find the right part without the complete model number. If the cooktop is gas and the oven is electric - they must be wired separate. Looks like you have to remove the oven from the cabinet to get the complete model number of the cooktop.

hi gene,

I just bought a used KitchenAid Superba Model KGRT507GBL0. The first day everything worked fine and then this morning one of the burners is continuing to spark even after it is lit(the other burners spark as well when that particular burner is turned on). They continue to spark even if all the other burners are lit. I tried to dry it out to no avail. I read your other replies and took apart the control panel and removed the purple wire to the ignitor switch to that particuar burner. This eliminated the problem, but the problem burner now has to be lit be match. What does this mean? Is the problem with the ignitor switch by the knob or is the burner not sensing that it is lit?

The first thing I would do is check if the burner cap is in the right position and all burner parts are dry and clean.

If this is not the issue then the ignition switch has to be replaced.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Kitchen Aid range Model KGRT507GBL0

Re: GE Cooktop JPG963SEJ1SS
Got it wet 5 days ago. It is still sparking at all burners. I do not have a tool (special screw driver) to remove the burners to try to dry it quicker. Thought about trying a hair dryer.
Should I wait a few more days? Will it eventually dry out?
Thank You
