My ice maker has been giving me problems, at first it would make ice intermittently so I removed the ice maker to look for problems but could not see one. I reassembled the unit and it started to fill with water but the water did not turn off and overfilled the ice tray. I turned off the ice maker and water supply. where do I start?
Would the water stop if you just turn the ice maker off, keeping the water supply on?

Hi Gene
I tried turnning off the ice maker by sliding the on/off slide (the one that is on the side of the freezer door that says ice maker control) to the off position and the water would not stop. When I activated the holiday mode on the main control panel in the refrigerator the water stopped. I then moved the refrigerator out and turned off the water supply cleaned up the mess and put the refrigerator back in normal mode. I am thinking I need the water control valve for the ice maker but not sure what controls it. any way of testing?

Does the water inlet valve for the ice maker also control the water supply for the water dispenser in the side of the frezzer door?
Thanks Bob
Hi Bob,
The water inlet valve on the back of the refrigerator controls water flow for the ice maker as well as for the water dispenser. It has 2 separated solenoids. Very likely it is the culprit.

Hi Gene
Thanks for the advise, I will order the water valve but would like to test the operation of the ice maker before ordering. is there any way I can test to see if anything else needs replacement as well? can I make it go through a cycle without actually having the water supplied to it?
Thanks, Bob
Remove the head cover from the ice maker.
Jump the test points “T” to “H”.
Make sure the ice bun is in the door, the slide switch is “on” and both doors are closed.
Unplug the unit for 10 seconds (the compressor should be “off” at this time) and then plug it back.
After 10 seconds, open and close the freezer door.
After 15 seconds, open the freezer door. The ice maker should be running.
Remove the jumper.

Hi Gene
I tested the operation as noted above and all worked ok. I ordered the new water valve and installed it. The ice maker made ice over night (guessing 3-4 loads) the next morning I opened the freezer door and fliped up the swing door that covers the ice maker and put my fingers into the ice tray to check and see if some more ice cubes were making- it felt like they were. I closed the flip door and the freezer door and less than 5 minutes latter I heard the water filling the ice maker again (before they had dumped the ones that were in there) the water kept running (I think more than a normal cycle) and started running over the ice tray again. I didnt think of turning off the ice maker slide switch until after I hit the holiday mode switch to turn off the water. Any ideas? what controls the amount of time the water valve stays open? water controls the water valve to open?
Thanks Bob

Hi Bob,
I’m afraid I did not get clear which door you called “swing door”. Can you describe it more specifically, refering to the diagrams posted earlier please?
The ice maker does it. So possible the ice maker itself is the culprit.
- The ice maker AP3182733

Hi Gene
The swing door I am refering to is actually called “door-ice” in the parts diagram, part# AP4365343. It sits in front of the ice maker part# AP3182733 on two hinges. when you flip it up you can see the ice maker fingers that move the ice from the ice tray to the ice bin once frozen. Did you say in your last post that the ice maker AP3182733 controls the water inlet valve part# AP4454644 (the one I just replaced) and the amount of time the water is turned on to fill the ice tray?
Hi Bob,
Yes, I did say it. It’s possible that the new ice maker will solve this problem.

Gene
I replaced the Ap4365074 ice maker and hooked back up- it has been 4-5 hrs and no water has filled the ice tray- water is turned on- ice maker control is in on position. I ran a jumper wire from “H” to “T” as per instruction earlier in this post to check to see if ice maker runs and it does but still no water filling the tray. any other ideas?
Thanks
Make sure the water line into the ice maker is not frozen.
Gene.
Hi Gene
The line to the ice maker was not frozen. I tested the operation of the new water inlet valve by taking an old extension cord and cutting off the female end then jumping across the terminals on the water inlet valve solenoid that runs the ice maker water supply line and found it did not work. I ran the same test on the old valve that I removed and found it did work. I replaced the new water inlet valve that I purchased from Appliance Parts Pros with the old one and the ice maker has been working like clock work producing frozen ice every hour for the pat 7 hours now. . Looks like the water valve that I purchased was defective, do you know the procedure to return a defective valve for a refund?
Thanks, Bob
Hi Bob. I’m glad you were able to fix it.
Unfortunately defective new parts are not surprise to me any more. You have to talk to the APP customer service to receive the instructions for the part return.
