Main Symptom: Excess water overflowing into ice bin
What happens : The icemaker adds too much water and it overflows into the ice bin. The icemaker was bad and I have put in a new one. The ice bin froze to the interior of the freezer and is now broken. I have that part number but I am told that potentially the water inlet valve may be bad and cause this. Any other things it could be so I can order tha correct parts? Thanks

Since you’ve already replaced the ice maker, the next most likely cause on a Whirlpool WRS571CIHB02 is indeed the water inlet valve, but there are a couple of other things worth checking before ordering parts.
Based on your symptoms (water overflowing into the ice bin and freezing the bin in place), I’d rank the causes like this:
- Water inlet valve (most likely)
- If the valve doesn’t close completely, it can continue dripping after the fill cycle.
- That extra water freezes, eventually overflowing the mold and creating a solid block of ice that freezes the bin in place.
- This is by far the most common failure after the ice maker itself.
- Frozen or partially blocked fill tube/fill cup
- If the fill tube has ice in it, the incoming water can spray or deflect into the ice bin instead of the mold.
- Remove the ice maker and inspect the fill tube for ice buildup or cracks.
- Misaligned fill tube
- Make sure the water tube is centered over the fill cup on the new ice maker.
- Even a slight misalignment can cause water to miss the mold and run into the bin.
- Main control board (less common)
- The control board determines how long the valve is energized.
- If you’ve installed a known-good OEM ice maker and a new inlet valve but it still overfills, the board could be commanding an excessively long fill.
- This is much less common than a bad valve but does happen. Some Whirlpool owners have found the ice maker was being commanded to fill twice, pointing toward a control issue rather than the valve itself.
Before ordering parts
I would do one quick test:
- Remove the ice bin.
- Let the ice maker complete a fill cycle.
- Watch the fill tube for 5–10 minutes afterward.
If you see any dripping after the fill cycle ends, replace the water inlet valve. A properly functioning valve should shut off completely with no drips.
My recommendation
Since the ice maker is already new and your symptom is overfilling rather than not filling, I would order the water inlet valve next. It is the highest-probability repair.
If the new valve does not solve it, the next suspect would be the main electronic control board, assuming the fill tube is clear and properly aligned.
