The emitter for the ice maker section is a part of the auger assembly. An easy check to identify if it has failed would be be to use the selfie camera of a phone to take a picture of the sensor. A camera with no filter can usually pick up the IR light, and a selfie camera usually does not have an IR cutting filter. If it looks like it is illuminated, the sensor is operating.
