Ice Maker forming icicles - Overfilling with ice

At first I noticed the ice maker was leaking water (When I opened the freezer, I would see icicles forming below the ice maker and small frozen water puddles in various spots from where it looks like the water was leaking from the ice maker down) nothing too major. It appears to be gradually getting worse, and the metal part were the ice cubes form has frozen water on them.

Then today, I opened the door, and ice spilled out of the freezer from the overfilled ice bucket on the door.

Just wondering where to start the troubleshooting. Never worked on an ice maker, but I am decently handy. Thanks for the help!

Hi.

What was spilling out of the bucket the ice cubes or the icicles?

Simon.

It was Ice Cubes

Is there a frozen water inside the ice bucket?

Do you mean that water freezes on the top of the ice cubes inside the icemaker?

I opened the freezer door and a bunch of ice cubes fell all over the floor from the top of the ice bucket. Once clearing out the excess ice cubes, I turned the ice maker off.

Looking in the ice bucket, it appears there is some frozen water in there as well, which looks to be freezing the cubes together.

Even though I have the switch turned to off for the ice maker, it is still over flowing with ice when I open the freezer door, and ice is falling all over the place.

Hi.

Most likely there is a bad optic control

Thanks I ordered the part, and will keep you posted.

As for the leaking of water, and icicles forming underneath the ice maker and creating mini puddles in the freezer, do you think that is an additional unrelated problem?

Appreciate all the help!

Hi.

The water leak could be because:

  • incorrectly installed inlet tube
  • leaking icemaker
  • overfilling the icemaker (try to adjust the cube size). The adjustment screw is on the side of the icemaker’s head.

Thank you.

Simon.

Ok, I got the part installed. While I had it unplugged, I tried to slide the ice maker out, and it wouldnt slide out. I noticed that it was frozen in with a block of ice that was underneath the ice maker in the white plastic tray. I got a hair dryer and melted the ice. I got the ice maker out, and the tray lining has completely come off, and is bubbiling up underneath. It’s disgusting, I cant believe I’ve been drinking with this ice.

Would love to just replace the whole ice maker, nice and easy repair for me. Do they sell it as a whole unit? I imagine that the mold is bad, along with something else causing the leak, so I’d rather not replace a part here and there. I didnt see the whole unit on the parts list. Thanks for the help on this!

Edit:
Found the part number, it is 2198597
I have ordered and will keep you guys posted of the progress. Thanks!

Hi.

That is the correct part.

Good luck.

Simon.

Simon, I’m back up and running! Never worked on an appliance before, thanks for making it easy with all the reference material and items needed. I had multiple problems I was able to resolve. The ice maker is not leaking any more, produces clean ice, and shuts off when it is supposed to. Much appreciated!

You are welcome.

Simon.
