So anyway. I have the new part, but it looks so different and has so many options of where I could connect wires to, I’m not sure which wires go where.
There are three wires from the fridge, and 5 places I could connect them to on this new part.
What was really tripping me up was: the instructions that came with the part showed a photo that was upside down, compared to what I was looking at on my fridge’s compressor.
If any fridge repair ninja can confirm that this is correct…or correct me if I’m wrong, that’d be awesome.
Where did you get the black PTC device? That is not a 8201769 which is this sites AP3961332
If you wire this ptc device wrong, you will burn out the compressor. With the use of the tan box with built in klixon and start device, it’s impossible to burn the compressor out.
I got the black PTC device after searching the web for the part I needed. I Googled and ended up at Sears Parts Direct dot com.
(If I’d seen AppliancePartsPro’s AP3961332 first, I’d definitely have gotten it, because you’re right: it looks exactly like the old part, AND it’s cheaper. Then again, it also says: Due to manufacturer changes part received may appear different than as shown in photo. So maybe I would have received the same black PTC if I’d ordered it…?)
But anyway, here’s how I got that black PTC device: after ending up at Sears Parts Direct on the web…
I entered in my refrigerator’s model number: ET8RHMXKT00
Which led me to several diagrams.
I chose the “Unit” diagram, and on that diagram, found my original Part No: 2213106. Next to that Part No., the site indicated there was a manufacturer substitution for that part. The new/substitution Part No. was 8201769. The site said: "This is a manufacturer substitution. Part may differ in appearance but is a functional equivalent to prior parts including 2213106.
So I went to a local appliance parts store and bought it from them. The box contained two overloads, with instructions on which overload to use, depending on what type of compressor you have.
Also, on the bottom of the Part box, there’s a sticker that says “WHIRLPOOL MAY PAY FOR THIS REPAIR. Whirlpool Corporation may pay for this replacement part and associated labor costs for affected start relays. Call…”
I guess that’s part of the ‘manufacturer substitution’ <–?
Thanks again for the reply - I TRULY APPRECIATE IT and your insights.
If you have the 8201769, wire it up per the instructions. Make sure you attach the run capacitor and add a 1000 joule surge protector to the wall outlet to prevent future burnout. If you want to use the ptc device you will need an ohmeter.
