How to force my refrigerator into defrost cycle

How do I make my Kenmore refrigerator (Model #: 25352642303) into forced defrost cycle? Thanks a lot.

Hello,

In order to activate the procedure: Press and release the fresh food door switch 5 times within 6 seconds. In order to deactivate it repeat the same action or just unplug the refrigerator for a few seconds.

What seems to be a problem with the refrigerator?

Gene.

Thanks for your information. I’ll give it a try.

My refrigerator is having the constant clicking noise from the top-left side of refrigerator before evaporator fan finally runs. I think the Adaptive Defrost Control unit is bad and ordered a brand new one (Part #: 5303918476). The clicking problem is solved but I found out the freezer is having severe frosting problem. I checked the evap heater with ohmmeter and found out it’s ok. I don’t know if it’s caused by my old and defective ADC II or by defrost thermostat. I know the new ADC IV is good. If I can force the refrigerator into defrost mode and defrosting does not happen. I would know the thermostat is bad. Please let me know if my logic is right. Thanks.

[Update]

Yeah. The procedure you provided works. Thanks again.

Did it defrost?

Gene.

Yes. It did. After defrost cycle is finished, the normal working mode is restored automatically. Can I assume the defrost thermostat is good?

Yes, the defrost thermostat should be good. If it will happen again, replace the adaptive defrost control board.

Thanks. This is the exactly I ordered and it looks like it fixed two problems of our my refrigerator. I really appreciate your help.

You are welcome. I’m glad you were able to fix it.

Happy holidays!

I know this an old thread, but was wondering if anyone can lead me in the right direction. I have a Kenmore Elite 795.78763.800 refrigerator. It has worked flawlessly up until about 2 weeks ago. One day we noticed a small pool of water under it. Also, we noticed a little before the day of the pooling that the fan (that circulates the cold air inside the unit was running constantly. I unplugged the for about 20 minutes and restarted it, and that seemed to work. After this procedure, I noticed that it was not running constantly. However, just 2 days ago, we had a power outage while we were away during the day. This afternoon we again found water pooled under the unit. Also, in opening the freezer section, I noticed ice that had pooled on the floor of the freezer compartment. water seemed to have entered the compartment from the back wall where the cold air blows into this compartment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

What are the temperatures in the freezer and refrigerator?
Your refrigerator is operated by electronic controls and has self-diagnosis futures. Did it show any error code on the dispenser display?

Thank you,
Gene.

Gene,

Thanks for the reply. I have not measured temps inside either compartments. However, I would assume they are holding at the set temps (0 for the freezer and 37 for the 'frig section). No error codes reported on control panel. However, from what I have read, one needs to go through a set sequence in order to get into a diagnostic mode, which I have not done…

Many thanks for your input.

Regards,
Ralph

Hello, Ralph.

If there is nothing wrong with the temperature in both compartments, then most likely there is nothing wrong with the defrost cycle. You have to investigate what caused water under the refrigerator from the back of the fridge.

Gene.

Hi Gene,

Thank you again for the quick reply. This evening there was again a pool of water in front of the unit. I investigated and found about a quarter inch thick sheet of ice on top of the bottom liner in the freezer compartment. I recall one day that the door was left partially open overnight. which would cause the unit to run continuously and affecting the run-defrost cycles adversely.

What I did this evening was disconnect the unit, unload the items in the freezer and removed the sheet of ice in the freezer bottom. I have reloaded the freezer and the unit is currently cooling down. It shouldn’t take too long to cool, as the unit was only off about 25 minutes.

Hopefully, the unit will now behave normally with the ice sheet removed. As I stated earlier, the unit maintained both the 'frig and freezer compartments in the designated temp settings. What was abnormal was that the unit seemed to run constantly and there was water running (apparently) out of the front (ice sheet was probably melting during the defrost cycle…

I do appreciate your input/help. I will post results when something changes either way. It may help others down the line that might have similar issues.

Best Regards,
Ralph

Hi, Ralph.

Every time when the freezer defrosting, the defrosted water should drain out of the freezer through a special drain. The drain hole is usually located under the evaporator coil in the back of the freezer. In your situation very likely the drain hole is clogged. If it was just frozen up then manual defrosting and removing the ice from the bottom of the freezer could help to solve the problem. Otherwise, it would need cleaning. Hot water pouring through the drain would do it.
