How to access water filter base

Please make sure to click on General above and select the correct appliance type first.

Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: PRFC2383AF9
Main Symptom: Water filter won’t pop out
What happens & when: The water filter will not pop out after repeated attempts. I need to access and probably replace the base of the filter but can’t figure out how to remove the left side shelf support (pictured) that gives access to the water filter housing. I’ve removed the one screw but there is something holding it still and I don’t want to force it.

For Frigidaire Professional PRFC2383AF9, I would not force that left-side support straight outward. The model-specific parts diagram shows the filter components—including the water-filter support #5304531689—in the shelf assembly.

After removing the visible screw, the support appears to still be retained by molded tabs/hooks engaging the refrigerator liner. The safe approach is:

  1. Remove the shelves/drawers around it so you can work without twisting the support.
  2. Remove the screw you already found.
  3. At the rear edge of the support, use a plastic trim tool or a wide flat screwdriver wrapped with tape.
  4. Gently work the support forward/away from the rear liner enough to disengage the retaining tabs, rather than simply yanking the whole piece toward you.
  5. Once the tabs release, the support should come free and expose the filter housing/base.

I would avoid putting a lot of leverage against the refrigerator’s inner liner—the support is replaceable plastic, but damage to the cabinet liner is a much bigger problem.

Also, your suspicion about the filter base/manifold is reasonable. A filter that pushes in but won’t spring back/release can have a failed or jammed locking mechanism in the filter holder. Similar Frigidaire filter holders are known to fail internally.

I tried to locate an image that showed the attachment points but was unable to find anything
