How do you ohm a compressor

I’m not sure what the readings are telling me. Pin to pin is 0 at rx1 on all pairs. R100 pin to ground was infinity. Whirlpool refrigerator, 19 cu. ft.,EB19AKXLW0.

The pin on the top, the one the flat klixon overload was stuck to is your common pin, under that to the left is the start winding pin, the one on the right is run(this is the usual arrangement), but you should verify
Measure from the common to the left pin, probably around 5 ohms, then the run pin measurement will be less than this, maybe around 3-4 ohms as measured from the common pin.

I ohmed common to the start winding and common to the run pin, they both read 0 ohms. I assume the compressor is shot. Should I waste the money to try a new start relay?

Very rare for both windings to short out. I would use a digital meter to check, common to run, common to start.

Thanks, I used a digital meter and the start winding is 4.4 ohms and the run is 2.9. When I looked up the start relay for the Whirlpool EB19AKXLGR it shows a one piece kit AP3119970, my unit has a seperate relay and overload (two pieces), is the AP3119970 the correct part? I would not use a "replacement " part. Go to my article in the general talk section ist page “replacing compressor start devices”
