I need help figuring out what’s wrong so I can fix it.
On my Maytag Dependable Care top loader, the motor runs, the spin cycle works, water pours in and runs out just fine.
In agitagtion mode, however, nothing happens. Even worse, when the problem first presented, it started to burn a hole in the belt.
The tray for the motor has two springs on one side and none on the other. It looks like there is a place for another spring, but there is none. I think, had it just fallen off, I would have found it in the washer body somewhere. I did not, so I assume there never was a third spring.
When I took the washer apart, the belt to the transmission was very loose. I assume this was because it started to burn through. I’m going to replace it, but I have a feeling the new one is going to burn through again.
Is there a way to check the transmission? Like I said, it is spinning fine in spin mode. When it is in agitation mode, the motor is spinning but only in one direction. Is it supposed to be spinning back and forth or does the transmission and/or agitator do that?
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

Remove the belt that goes to the transmission. Hand turn the transmission pulley. In one direction the entire trans should turn, that would be the spin cycle. Then turn it the other direction, the pulley should turn freely and if someone is in the room with you they should see the agitator go back and forth as you continue to turn it. If the pulley doesn’t turn freely, you are probably looking at a bad transmission. That isn’t good. If it does work ok then make sure the motor is freely moving back and forth in that carriage device it floats in. If it doesn’t then new rollers and springs may be in order. Also make sure that carriage isn’t rusted up.
Thanks for the info. It looks like my transmission is fine.
I removed the aggitator, to make sure nothing was stuck in there, then put it back on. I replaced the belts and made sure the motor was traveling freely on its tracks.
Well, the agitator is working now.
I’m guessing either 1) there was something stuck in the aggitator or the motor rails or 2) this is an intermittent problem that will come back to haunt me later.
I’m assuming it’s number one.
Thanks again.
