Help with Kenmore thru-the-wall AC unit

I have a Kenmore thru-the-wall air conditioner unit. I purchased it in 2004. Recently, when I would put it on the air conditioning setting, it would make a noise as if the compressor was trying to kick on, but it would not kick on. It would make this noise a few times, every minute or so. The fan, however, would continue to run. The fan also works fine in fan mode.

I called Sears to set up a repair call, as the sealed components have a 5 year warranty. However, the technician told me over the phone that I may not want to risk the $109 service call charge, as it is likely not a sealed component issue- but rather electrical.

Is there anyway for me to test any components and possibly repair this unit myself? It is a model #75085, 8,000 BTU unit.

Thanks in advance.

You may just need a “Hard-Start” kit. Available at most good parts stores.

Thank you for the response Icehouse. Is there a proper name for a “Hard Start” kit? Is the part easy to install? I have never worked on an AC unit. Thanks again.

you would also have to check the run capacitor

check the capacitor for theprper mfd rating output. do tes with a multimeter with mfd setting
