Gibson upright freezer not freezing

After defrosting my almost 20 year old freezer this summer, it apparently decided it had had enough. After restarting it, the only part that got cold was the back part of the upper shelf coil - around which frost developed. The freezer ran constantly but this was all that got cold. We finally gave up after a week of this, but are really missing our freezer space and would like to repair it if possible. Any ideas?

How did you defrost it?

Sounds like you are low on freon that is why it only cools a small porsion of the evaporator coils.

It is probably best to purchase a new unit.
To repair this unit would be expensive and there is no guarantee that the leak can be found and repaired.

Defrosted it by turning it off, unplugging it, opening the drain, putting the hose in a pan, and putting a bunch of towels down to catch the overflow. Then, just left it open to thaw.
