Ghost dryer beeping

Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MDG6800AWW
Main Symptom: Beeping, Shutting off, cycle selection incorrect
What happens & when: Dryer beeps on and off with or without laundry causing me to unplug it every time. Once laundry is put in, it has a mind of its own sometimes and I cannot select “Time Dry”. If I am able to start it on “Time Dry”, it automatically switches to “Sensor Dry” and sometimes does still do the “Time Dry” cycle even if it’s in “Sensor Dry”. When the cycle gets done, if I do not unplug it, it will beep and beep non-stop every few minutes. Yes, this is with the Alarm volume off. Also, sometimes it does not finish the cycle and shut off causing my clothes to still be wet. It’s making me insane.

Error Code (if any):
Parts or tests already tried: I have read the manual and tried the service mode and whatnot. Replaced the door latch, replaced the moisture detector, open the control board/panel and clean, tired to clean the buttons in case one is stuck. Please help. Dryer is still in great shape.

This symptom pattern points very strongly to the console membrane/keypad, not the moisture sensor or door latch.

On the MDG6800AWW, the keypad/membrane is a separate part from the electronic control board. Maytag’s parts list identifies the console/membrane as 33002896 and lists separate electronic control boards depending on production series.

The big clues are the dryer beeping while idle, refusing or changing cycle selections, switching from Time Dry to Sensor Dry, and continuing to beep even with the alarm turned off. Those behaviors are consistent with the control receiving phantom button presses. Cleaning the outside/buttons often won’t fix this because the failure can be inside the membrane switch layers or ribbon circuitry.

Best diagnostic test

Unplug the dryer first.

Open the console and locate the ribbon/connector from the membrane keypad to the electronic control board. Take a photo of all connections before disconnecting anything.

Disconnect only the console/membrane keypad connection from the board, then reassemble enough that nothing exposed can be touched and restore power.

Leave it sitting for a while.

If the random beeping completely stops with the keypad disconnected → replace the console/membrane (33002896).

That would be my #1 suspect by a considerable margin.

Unfortunately, Whirlpool/Maytag lists 33002896 as discontinued, so you’d likely need a used/NOS console or possibly have your existing membrane repaired.

If it STILL beeps with the membrane disconnected

Then I’d move to the electronic control board.

Maytag used different control boards depending on the machine’s production series—the official parts list shows 33002898, 33002918, and 33002959 depending on series, and other parts catalogs also show later board references. So don’t order a board based only on MDG6800AWW; use the serial/series and the number printed on your existing board.

Since you’ve already replaced the moisture detector and latch and cleaned the control area, I would not throw any more parts at it before doing that membrane-disconnect test.

One additional distinction: if by “door latch” you mean the plastic/mechanical catch, that’s different from the electrical door switch. The model does have a separate door switch. But a door-switch problem doesn’t explain the incorrect cycle selections nearly as well as a failing keypad/interface.

My probability order from your description:

  1. Console/membrane keypad 33002896 — very likely
  2. Electronic control board — possible
  3. Loose/corroded keypad ribbon connection — possible
  4. Door switch/wiring — much less likely
  5. Moisture sensor — essentially ruled out for the random idle beeping
