My washer, GE WSM2700TEWWB (electric, “spacemaker” version), fills with water, but then when it’s supposed to agitate, it just buzzes for 10-20 seconds as if it’s trying to agitate, then quits. If I move the selector to the rinse cycle, it drains the water, then refills, and again attempts to agitate, but only buzzes; if I then move it to the spin cycle, it drains and spins. I removed the front panel, and can move the belt by hand when the machine is turned off (it’s tight - kind of like pedaling a bike uphill); when the machine is on and it buzzes when attempting to agitate, no parts seem to be moving until right when the buzzing stops - then the pulley and belt move a tiny bit. The agitator and agitator coupling are almost brand new (replaced them about 2 months ago), so I’m confident that’s not the problem, and the spin cycle works, so I think the belt is OK (but I’m not really qualified to make that call!). Can you give me an idea what the problem might be, and if it’s worth fixing? Thanks!
Remove the belt and try to move the transmission pulley in both ways. See if the agitator will oscillate.
Run the washer on agitate cycle without the belt to see how the motor will behave.
Post the results.

Thank you…the results are these: with the belt off and the machine off, I can only move the pulley in the counter-clockwise, “spin” direction - in the other direction, I can’t move it at all.
When the machine is on and the belt is off, I get the same result as when the belt was on - in the agitate cycle, I get the buzzing, but no movement (although with the belt off, the buzzing doesn’t stop - with the belt on, it stopped after 10-20 seconds).
What does this mean? Should I be looking for something new?
Thanks again for your help.
Does that buzzing come from the motor? Does the motor run?
Gene.
I think the buzzing is from the motor - I think it’s running but not doing anything. Maybe a silly question - where else could the buzzing be coming from?
Did you remove the front panel prior to this test? Did it buzzing with the belt removed?

Yes and yes. With the belt removed, the buzzing was non-stop; with the belt on, the buzzing lasted 10-20 seconds and then stopped.
Sounds like the motor has gone bad.
- The part number for the motor is AP3859263

I have the spacemaker electric washer and dryer.
Folks seems to suggest that one of either is the way to open the fron panels/
- pressing some tabs between the top and the front panel. However, in mine they are white and made of plastic and seem to be impossible to remove
- other folks are saying two screws are in the bottom of the panel.
Can you confirm what you did?

Mine had two screws at the bottom of the panel - I removed these and was then able to remove the panel.
Before ordering a motor, verify the transmission pully will not turn in the agitation direction. Replacing the motor and the tranny would be cost prohibitive for a GE washer. Also, make sure there are no clothes in the washer when you turn the tranny pulley.
