Hi, on your GE washer, that metal-on-metal grinding noise during agitation could be coming from a worn clutch slider, a weak clutch spring, or a loose drive pulley nut.

I would start by unplugging the washer and checking underneath it. Inspect the clutch assembly for worn or damaged teeth, check that the spring isn’t broken or weak, and make sure the drive pulley nut is tight.

If everything looks good, may need to check the transmission as well. Does the grinding noise happen only during agitation, or do you also hear it when the washer goes into spin? That will help narrow down the problem.

Hi, another thing I would definitely check is the large nut holding the main drive pulley in place. These can sometimes work themselves loose on GE washers, causing the pulley to wobble and the gears to grind against each other, even if the actuator is brand new.

Start by unplugging the washer, carefully tilting it back, and making sure it’s securely supported. Grab the large pulley underneath and see if you can wiggle it side to side or up and down. There shouldn’t be any noticeable looseness.

If the nut is loose, remove it, inspect the pulley and shaft for damage, and secure it back in place using the manufacturer’s recommended torque. You can also use blue Loctite if it’s approved for that fastener to help keep it from loosening again.

if you notice any movement in that pulley. That could be what’s causing the grinding noise.

Thank you again for your assistance! I did disassemble the components. There appears to be no wear on the clutch; the spring does not seem damaged. The Shift Actuator is new. And the main pulley was intact; the nut was tight. We hear the grinding only during agitation; never during spin. Does this give you an idea where we should look next? I presume it would be the transmission(?). How would I check it? Does APP have any tutorial and/or video guidance for the transmission? Again, thank you.
