GE Washer -- spins ok, won't agitate

Hi all,

We have a washer that came with the house when we bought it about 3 years ago.

Today it stopped agitating and makes a burning smell when it should be in the agitation cycle.

However, it still spins fine (at least when empty).

I opened the front and the belt is fine.

I don’t know anything about appliance repair, but from glancing at a few things, I think it might be the transmission.

Hopefully somebody can tell me if I am likely correct and what the repair job would look like.

We have a spare set of washer/ dryer in the garage from when we moved in, and we will probably try to use them and ditch the old washer if it is a hard repair job.

Thanks!

Need the full model number of the washer.

Eric

I put it in the drop down, but it got truncated:

WSLR2000G2WW

Thanks!

Try rotating the motor pulley by hand in the agitation direction. One direction is for spin, the opposite is for agitation. If it won’t rotate in agitation direction pull the agitator to make sure no clothing got jammed under it. To pull agitator, place strap under it and yank upwards forcefully to pop it off. If nothing jammed under there then transmission is bad.

It spins freely in one direction and under load but still moving in the other direction. Feels like the transmission to me .

thanks!
