The washing machine still seems to be running fine, but over the past few months has gotten unbearably loud during the spin cycles. Is it the tub bearing that needs replacing? How difficult is that repair?

It is probably the tub bearing which is not a difficult repair, but first operate it with the front panel off and see if you can confirm where the problem is and where the noise is coming from.
