It sounds like the main control board has likely failed. The error codes 28 and 36 don’t appear to be valid for the model number provided, which—along with the symptoms you’re seeing—further points to a control board issue.

The good news is that the main control board is still in production. You can view the part and its details at the following link:

Thanks for the reply. This is a new control board. It was replaced March 2025. Machine purchased new in October 2020. Everything worked prior to February 2025 when the machine started having issues. It eventually locked up mid-cycle, and would not drain. I had repair guys from Thumbtack come out and diagnose it. They said failed main control board and replaced it. Machine works but as mentioned, the LED does not work. Not sure what to say about error codes…but that is what the machine is throwing when I go through the codes. According to the GE app, when the main control board was replaced, it showed up in the app as GFW650SSN2WW, which I was told is similar. The personality code appears to be set correctly as well. Thanks.

Just to cover all bases—do you know which personality code was set into the control during installation? That can affect how the appliance functions and is worth verifying.

Here is the personality codes for that part # Control board WH22X37840. Was it set right?

Personality code 4 would be the correct one. If personality 4 was used during the installation process, the failure would be in the main control as referenced previously.

Thanks for all of the replies. I verified the personality code and it is set to 4. Checked error codes and now it is throwing 38. According to my online research, that code is for the Vent Damper. Fault is set if close/open feedback is not fails after 5 seconds. Run service mode Damper test 24 to verify feedback open/close. Check wiring harness and connections. Replace damper if damper feedback open/close is not detected.

I ran this test, and the display did not toggle as expected, so I assume that is a bad damper?

Aside from the LED not working, machine appears to operate as normal…I’ll have to try to decide if I want to try to replace the damper or not. Not sure if I want to invest in a 3rd main board…I’m getting close to what I can get a new machine for if I take into account the money spent so far repairing this one.

Thanks again for the replies.
