Brand: GE
Model Number: gtw840csn0ws
Main Symptom: Tub not spinning during wash cycle
This is re: a washer repair but it won’t let me submit the question under that category. No Appliance Brand options show up and it is a required field. So, I’m posting it under Dryer Repair since that category seems to work.
We have a top-load GE gtw840csn0ws washer, with an impeller rather than a traditional agitator. It is somewhere around 5 years old and started acting up this week. It started making a grinding noise during the wash and spin cycles. To me, it sounded like the clutch was slipping. It would slip and make the grinding noise. Then it seemed to catch, the grinding would stop, and the tub would move a bit. Then it would start slipping again, the grinding would start again and the tub would stop moving.
I ordered a replacement clutch, spring, and mode shifter. I installed those today but it still isn’t working right. The tub spins fine when you first start the washer as it goes through the “sensing” cycle. Then it fills fine. When it switches to the wash cycle, it sounds like the motor is spinning but the tub doesn’t move. I’m assuming that probably means the transmission isn’t engaging to spin the tub for some reason. I don’t hear the grinding noise anymore, so I guess that is an improvement. If I switch it over to drain/spin mode, the tub drains and spins out fine.
Any suggestions on what the issue could be or what to try next?
