GE PTW700 Does not Start

Brand: GE Profile
Model Number: PTW700BPTDG
Main Symptom: Washer does not start when hitting Start Cycle.
What happens & when:

[Purchased new two years ago ]The first issue started when the washer initially completely turned off during the middle of spin cycle. I took top panel off to inspect main control board, and J701 connector (accelerometer) was oddly disconnected. The main control board visually seemed “okay” but the washer was not turning on at all. I replaced the main control board.

Once the new control board was installed with the correct Personality ID (#1), the washer turned on with no issues. I had left J701 disconnected thinking it was supposed to be left connected. In the Field Services Mode, reading the Error codes, #89 showed up at first. I ran Test Code #14 “Spin” to see if that would fix the issue per the Technical Manual, but it did not start. I replaced the Lid Lock and Harness thinking there was an issue with the locking mechanism which was why Test 14 was not starting. Then that’s when I realized I needed to connect J701.

After connecting J701, error code 89 was not showing up anymore. I tried running a cycle but it did not start. I went on the Field Service Mode #1 to read the error codes, and error code #4 - Low Power Relay came up.

I ran a few troubleshoots as an attempt to pin point where error #4 came from. I disconnected all connections from main control board except the three below and started connecting the remaining connections 1 by 1 after a series of test.
J101 - AC IN Power Cord
J513 - Lid Lock
J703 - User Interface

I first started with the three above: I turned on the washer, Performed the Service Mode Test #1 to read any codes from start up, then Service Mode Test #16 to erase all codes, then attempted to perform Service mode test #14, then Service Mode Test #1 for any new error codes, then Service mode #16 to erase the codes, to then disconnect the washer for 10 mins and start again after connecting a new connector on the main control board.

This was the results: [Connectors / error codes from #1 at Start up/ error codes from #1 after #16 and #14]

J101+J513+J703 / 44 - 51 - 89 / none
+J701 / 44 - 51 / none
+J1001 / 44 - 51 / none
+J802 / 44 - 51 / none
+J1101 / 44 - 51 / 4
+J1102 / 4 / 4
-J1102 (removed) / none / 4

Error #4 started showing up when I connected J1101 and ran Service Mode Test #14. When I connected J1102, Error #4 showed up from the beginning.

My assumption is the issue could be either in the speed sensor or the motor. The issue could be broader since the washer stopped working and J701 was somehow disconnected and broke the original main control board. Could there have been some sort of short circuit and damage multiple parts? In the fence of putting more money repairing it or buying a new washer.

Error Code (if any): Error 4 - Low Power Relay

From the description you’ve got a low voltage DC drag that’s confusing the main control, either with the speed sensor AP6980673 which is what connects to 1101, or the water valve thermistor AP7012649 which connects to 1102.

The easiest test would be to disconnect 1102 and take a resistance reading on the harness from wire to wire. Should read about 8.8k-12.5k ohms at room temperature.

I followed your instructions. I checked the resistance reading on the J1102 harness on the only two pins: Pin 2 and Pin 3. The reading I got was 10.5k Ohms.
I did the same for J1001 and got 5.8 Ohms between Pins 6-7, 6-8, and 7-8.
As for J1101, Pins 1-2 was 5.14kOhms, Pins 1-3 was 0, Pins 2-4 was 8.19k Ohms, Pins 3-4 was 0 Ohms.
My guess is it’s the speed sensor?

Yup, bad speed sensor.

Thanks for the help Rory!

Replaced the Speed Sensor, and unfortunately still getting the same error #4 Low Power Relay.
