GE GTW680BSJ1WS new drum/basket doesn't seem to fit

Brand: GE
Model Number: GTW680BSJ1WS
Main Symptom: new drum/basket doesn’t fit

My GE washer stopped working. Took a look and the basket is corroded, as is apparently typical on these units. Ordered a new basket, but the new unit’s hub is very different than the previous unit’s. The original unit’s hub was completely splined, the new unit’s splines don’t start for an inch or so. It is also a lot thicker, maybe 3/4” or so. The splines on the transmission shaft are only an 1” long, so there is physically no way this can work, as far as I can tell.

The new drum is https://www.geapplianceparts.com/store/parts/spec/WH45X24194 which superseded the original part.

It doesn’t look like the gearcase has been redesigned, and the manufacturer doesn’t have any notes on this that I’ve been able to find. From the pictures of the new basket, I’m wondering if you may have been sent the wrong one, that hub doesn’t quite look the same as the manufacturer’s pictures or any others that I’ve been able to find. It might just be the lighting in your pics, but in all the ones I’ve seen, that hub is a much darker gray and is not the same shade as the rest of the bottom of the outer part of the basket.

I agree, I think I was sent the wrong part. A friend of a friend, that happens to run an appliance repair business, took a look at a Facebook post I made and said that I had the right part number but the part wasn’t correct – in fact he had just installed the same and his looked very different.

I have an open request to the part supplier, hopefully they agree with all of us and replace the part.
