I need to replace the top burner electrode (ignitor) on a GE glass top stove. Do I have to remove the glass top to get to the electrode? If so how do I remove. Thanks
TJM, No, you shouldn’t need to remove the glass cook top from the range. But you do need to remove power and turn off the gas supply. You do need to remove the grates, burner cap and the two screws on the inside of the burner base. Carefully lift the burner base up and off the cook top. disconnect the ignitor wire from the ignitor and tape or clip it, so it doesn’t slip back under the top.
Here’s the cook top removal instructions, just in case:
MAINTOP REMOVAL AND ACCESS TO SPARK MODULE
- Cut off gas supply to range.
- Cut off electrical supply to range.
- Remove the control panel as follows:
a) Remove knobs.
b) Unscrew and remove hexagonal control panel fasteners.
c) Remove control panel faceplace.
d) Remove hex head screws from metal insert.
e) Lift off insert / clock assembly.
f) Remove the 5 amp connectors from the electronic clock.
g) Disconnect the 12 pin amp connector.
h) Remove the upper hex head screws holding the control panel to the maintop frame.
i) Remove the lower screws holding the control panel to the maintop baffle.
(NOTE: These are accessed through the top of the oven cavity behind the door.)
j) Remove the control panel. - Remove the gas fitting (right side) connecting the gas manifold to the gas supply line.
- Remove two screws, one right, one left holding the maintop to the range frame.
- Unscrew and remove the oven cavity vent using a 1/2 inch socket and turn counterclockwise.
- Lift off the maintop by sliding foward. NOTE: Take care to miss the oven cavity vent when
sliding forward.
Good Luck and Thanks,
