GE Frontload "dumb washer" prematurely ends cycle

Brand: GE

Model Number: Gew850spnrs

Main Symptom: Cycle ends prematurely

What happens & when:

When i start a cycle, it works fine, the about 15 mins in (regardless of cycle) it tries to drain the water. MOST of the water gets drained, i can hear it and see it, but then the humming/motor noise doesnt go away, and it continues for several minutes. Then it will turn off, and on again 3 times. The 3rd time, the sound/pump stays on for another min (with no water draining) and ends the cycle prematurely.

I checked the drain, and a few cups of water pour out each time, but its perfectly clean. Im thinking its not completely draining, but have no idea what the fix is. Why is it only draining halfway? what parts do i need to replace?

This is basically a new washer, ive used it less than 20 times since purchased.

thank you for any help.

About how tall is the standpipe for the home that the drain hose goes into?

4 feet? Its barely 6 inches above the washer itself. inserted about 12 inches in, but ive tried running it holding it 1 inch in.

I suspect you’ve got an issue with the drain pump itself since it is running without putting out water, sounds like the drain system itself is clear since it does get rid of some water but I’d check it for any blockages in the hoses.

Could you double check that model #? I’m not pulling anything up with it. If you want you can attach a picture of the model/serial tag in this thread.

im not at home right now, but im sure thats the model number. heres a link also that i found. https://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/GFW850SPNRS.html?srsltid=AfmBOop5zc3VSLiXnt8agaRp-p5mr5tzr6Sa5Vk67vp4ByWXt8jhs3jB

Serial number is : Tm304088n

After some research, it seems the bit of water coming out when i open the drain is normal. The washer drains properly, there is a very strong flow of water when it drains it just doesnt get told that its finished draining, and doesnt continue to the next step. (at least i think)

GFW850SPNRS is a good model # but you had put GEW850SPNRS and I didn’t want to assume. From the description it sounds like you need to replace the drain pump WH11X39237.

Ah, im sorry, and thank you, ill order one now

just got home, and i remembered there are a few other major issues i didnt mention.

I really dont use this washer often, about 6 months ago, i replaced the control panel. Since then, im not 100% sure if the machine has done a “complete” cycle. Its always turned on, spins, adds water and i walk away. I never waited long enough until the drain part.. It is very possible that its been doing this since i replaced the control board.

Yes i am an idiot. Could that have been the issue the whole time? Do i need to program it, or is the control board wrong/needs to be replaced again?

If you’re experiencing water in the tub and the drain pump running with no water being pulled out that has to be a drain system issue. When the drain pump is running you should have water coming out of the drain hose if there is water in the tub, that part of things shouldn’t have anything to do with the control. All the control is doing at that point is supplying voltage.

i apologize for any confusion, the water is fully draining out of the tub, but after its done draining, the pump doesnt stop, it continues to run for 10-15 mins then ends the cycle prematurely

Ok, that clears things up a bit. I’d use the service mode to check the codes and test the various components but you may very well be looking at a control board WH22X37840 issue. I’m attaching the tech sheet for this model below.
