GE Fridge - Freezing veges in the crisper

I’m experiencing frozen food in the bottom two vege drawers. No other issues with other sections of the fridge and no problems with the freezer. I had a repairman out and he suggested just unplugging the lower motor that blows the cold air into the lower vege drawer. The fan is not blowing but enough cold air is still being forced into the lower drawer that it’s still freezing the bottom two drawers. In your opinion what parts should I order to fix this? Possibly a new damper, thermostat,or something entirely different? Thank you in advance.

Such freezing caused by excessive air flow from the vents in the tower.

GE designed the special insulation kit to fix this problem. It comes with the installation instructions.

Hi Gene - thanks for your quick reply. I’m confused though. If it’s an insulation problem why would my situation happen after 5 years of service. It would seem it should have been like this all along. You’re the expert but it seems like something broke all of a sudden because it literally was working fine one day and wasn’t the next day. Without seeing my fridge in person it’s hard to fully diagnose but do you think it could be the damper or are you sure I need this insulation kit? Thanks again.

I do not think it is the damper because it provides cold air for the whole compartment, so the food on the top shelves should be frozen as well. My recommendations were based on the GE Service bulletin which is attached to the post.

I am also having the same problem as you. My GE side by side is approx. 4 years old and I just recently began having the problem with the two bottom drawers freezing the contents. I agree with you that if this is a design problem, why did it just start occurring. Also, this service bulletin was issued in July 2002 and I bought my refrigerator in 2007. Did you order the part and did it solve the problem? I will have to call a repair person because I am not capable to installing this kit.

Can anyone confirm that this worked? I have EXACT same issue and also bought my fridge in 2006 (well after the release of the memo) so am unsure as to why it was not resolved on a go forward basis.

I had the GE sponsored repair man out before finding this forum and they could find nothing wrong. Charged $100 to look at it for an hour! I found this forum on my first google search! Wish I had have done the Google search before calling him! How does he not know this?! BRUTAL.

$250 in produce lost so far.

Hi gene,

I am having the exact same issue with our fridge. I have read you previous post and was wondering if this kit would fix the problem for our fridge as well. The model number on this fridge is
“GFRS2KBXA SS”
Serial # “GR 306382”

Would really like to resolve this problem soon so would appreciate any help available. Thank you.
Mike

Hi Mike,

This refrigerator made by GE to use in Canada. Unfortunately we do not have any technical documentation for such appliances. You can try to use this kit but I can not confirm that this is the correct way to fix it.
