GE Dryer Timer Won't Advance

My GE Dryer timer won’t advance. The motor runs, the cloths get dry however the timer won’t move! I thought it was a faulty timer, so I replaced the timer and still have the same issue.
Any suggestions??

Assuming this only occurs in the auto dry cycle, check the power resistor. This is an odd looking black device with two terminals on it next to the timer. It’s resistance should read around 4500 ohms.

Eric, I took an ohm reading on the power resistor and got 0 ohms, so I thought that meant it was open, so I replaced it. I’m still having the same issue, the timer won’t advance in any setting and it won’t heat. So now I’ve replaced the timer and the power resistor. I’m stumped!

Any other suggestions would be appreciated..

I suggested the power resistor assuming the problem only occurred in auto dry. You didn’t initially say that it wouldn’t advance in any setting. You said that the clothes get dry. How can they get dry if it doesn’t heat? You didn’t initially mention that it didn’t heat. These two things are key clues to the problem. If the timer won’t advance in timed dry cycle, either the timer is bad or there is a wiring issue. As for the no heat problem, that could be any number of things. First check to see that you have 240vac at the cord connection block.

Eric, Sorry for the confusion… Initially it seemed to be heating somewhat …Now I get no heat and no timer advance… I’ll check for 240vac at the connection block as you suggested.

Ok, but the timer should advance in timed dry cycle regardless if you have 240vac or not. You don’t even have to start the dryer. Just place the timer into the timed dry cycle and it should start advancing. If it won’t, it’s a bad timer or a wiring issue. Check the yellow wire that runs from timer X terminal to the dryer cord connection block center terminal (neutral).

The timer does advance in the timed cycle, and there is no heat…

Hard to keep up with your changing symptoms :confused:

The timer won’t advance in auto cycle unless the heat is functioning normally so those problems are related. Again, check for 240vac at dryer cord connection block.
