GE Dryer drum not turning

It’s an electric dryer. When I turn the start switch it hums, but the drum does not turn. I did hold the switch, hold the start switch, and turned by hand. It moves easily, but will not start. I also checked while doing that to see if there was any heat, or air flow, and I didn’t notice any. I didn’t do this for long, so perhaps it might have heated up. It’s a 7 year old dryer, not happening at a good time but it never does does it?

Thank you.

Sounds like the motor is toast.

Thanks for your answer. I will take it apart today to check the belt and see if it is stretched out or broken, but I was worrying about the motor as you suggested. Is there any way I could check this out–the motor I mean? If the belt looks bad I would have an investment of only $22.00 buying it here, so won’t lose a lot.

I doubt it is the belt as it looks like the unit has a belt interlock switch.
So if the belt was loose or broken the motor should not get any power.

You are the best denman–I am going to start looking for dryers. At least I can hang the clothes for now. Thank you again for your help. Glad I found this forum.
