GE dishwasher won't start even when control panel lights work and door locks

Please make sure to click on General above and select the correct appliance type first.

Brand: GE Adora
Model Number: GHDA980K10WW
Main Symptom: Unit won’t start wash cycle
What happens & when: The door will lock and when I press the start button, on any wash cycle, the door lock engages and the normal water filling sound doesn’t happen. Will say that for some time there has been a “grinding” or increase noise when the unit first starts and during the was/rinse cycles. That never bothered me as it usually is running while I am sleeping.

Error Code (if any):
Parts or tests already tried:

  • tested the tub float inside and it is not stuck and move normally
  • tested the door switches with a multimeter and both have correct continuity
  • tried to reset the unit by holding a wash cycle and start button but nothing seemed to happen

A test can be done to identify if there may be an issue with the control or a separate part. If the Cookware (Pots and Pans on some models) and the Heated Dry buttons are pressed and held down at the same time for 3 seconds, the dishwasher should enter into a test mode. The test mode can be exited at any time by pressing the Start/Reset button. Once the test mode is activated, the keys to the left and the right of the start button can be used to activate individual parts for testing. Using the attached image of how the keypads will be identified (based on their position from the start button) for testing purposes, press the 1L button to activate the drain pump. It should turn the drain pump on. If the drain pump does not turn on, a voltage test at the drain pump would be used to identify if 120 Volts AC is reaching the drain pump. Press the 1L button again to turn the drain pump test off. If the drain pump did operate, the water valve can be turned on by pressing the 5L button. This will help identify if the valve is receiving voltage and operating properly. If water does not come through, the valve would be tested directly for 120 Volts AC. Press the 5L button again to stop the valve test. What do you find using this test procedure?

I believe I entered the test mode correctly. Once I press both the pots and pans and the heated dry buttons they beeped and then stayed lit. Once both buttons had green lights on them I pressed the 1l and nothing happened and then I pressed the five L and still nothing happened so I pressed the start button to exit the test mode. Any ideas where I should go from here? I have a multimeter so it’s possible that I could perform the voltage test but I need a little bit of guidance on how to do that. Thanks so much for sending a reply.

If the dishwasher is pulled out just enough to set the meter probes into the wire connectors going to the drain pump, the meter can be set to Volts AC and the test mode activated again. When the 1L button is pressed, does the meter read 120 Volts AC? If not, and if there is no evidence of wires being damaged, the main control would be the cause of failure. Unfortunately, if this is the case, it appears the manufacturer has discontinued this part from what I see in this link. WD21X10463 Module Control Asm | Genuine Ge OEM In Stock

Thanks William. I will try and test the voltage tomorrow.
