GE Dishwasher Starts, but stops after a couple minutes

Hi,

Thanks in advance for the help! We are having a problem with our dishwasher. It’s a GE, Profile, model # GLD4500R00CC.

For starters, we noticed water pouring out of it today while we were rinsing dishes in the sink. We were not running the dishwasher at the time, but the dishwasher was open because we were loading it.

The water was pooling at the bottom of the dishwasher, pouring out over the sides, and also dripping out of the top of the front panel while it was open (which looked like it had filled up with water internally, if that makes any sense).

I cleaned the water off the floor, closed the dishwasher, and ran a rinse cycle. It pumped all the water out and everything seemed fine. I also ran the garbage disposal and checked the sink… no clogs and everything seems to work as it should.

The dishwasher ran through the rinse cycle, but now we can’t get it to run a regular wash cycle. It starts like normal, but it only runs for about 2-4 minutes before it suddenly turns off and all the lights go off on the front panel.

I tried flipping the breaker switch but that didn’t help. After some Google searching it sounds like it could be a bad motor. I’m willing to try replacing it myself, but I don’t want to go through the hassle if it might be something else. Any ideas?

For background, the dishwasher was originally installed in the house when we built it roughly 4 years ago.

In case anyone has the same problem and finds this thread, I figured I would post an update.

We eventually decided to call a service tech. For starters, the tech thinks the excess water in the dishwasher was caused when we were rinsing dishes in the sink (possibly too much water / food in the disposal). He originally thought it could be the water valve but that appeared to be working fine.

But… when the excess water flowed into the dishwasher it caused the float to get stuck in the “up” position, which prevented the dishwasher from running a wash cycle. Turns out the motor and everything else was fine. All he had to do was bump the float free and now everything works!

I’m glad I didn’t go with my gut and buy a new motor. The whole service charge was less than the cost of a motor, not to mention the time and hassle it would have been to drag the dishwasher out, flip it on it’s back and work on it!
