GE dishwasher controls do not light up

Brand:GE
Model Number:GDT655SGJ0BB
Main Symptom: Controls do not light up
What happens & when: I tried to start the dishwasher several years ago and the control panel was unlit and non-responsive. I turned the breaker off and on and it worked for several months. I repeated the breaker routine several times over a yearly period. Finally, I ordered and installed a new control board and the dishwasher worked regularly. Now today, several years later, the same thing happened and I again ordered and installed a new board but the dishwasher still doesn’t light up. I know that power is getting to the plug that plugs into the control board. Is there something else after the control board that could cause this problem or is the new control board faulty?

Yes. On GE GDT655SGJ0BB, there is another major component after the lower/main control board: the user interface (UI) control board in the top of the door, plus the wiring harness connecting the two boards. GE’s parts listing identifies the lower machine control separately from the UI top logic board.

Given your history, I would not assume the new main board is bad yet. The next test is very useful.

What I would check

With power disconnected, access the main control board and look at its small green service LED. Then restore power carefully.

The service LED can tell you quite a bit:

  • LED completely OFF → main board isn’t receiving proper power, or the main board is bad.
  • LED blinking about once per second → communication has been lost between the main control and UI. Suspect the UI board or door harness.
  • LED steady ON → can indicate the UI personality/configuration isn’t set correctly or communication with the UI has been lost.
  • Normal slower blinking → main control is alive, making the UI/harness much more likely.

More importantly, you can actually measure the power being sent to the UI.

The service information calls for approximately 13.5 VDC going from the main control toward the UI. At the UI itself, measure J401 pin 1 (black/green) to pin 2 (yellow/blue).

If you have ~13.5 VDC at the UI connector but the controls remain completely dead: the UI control board is the likely failure.

If you have ~13.5 VDC leaving the main control but not at the UI: suspect the door wiring harness, particularly where it flexes/passes through the door/tub area. GE specifically notes that this harness can become pinched or develop an internal break that isn’t necessarily visible.

If you don’t have ~13.5 VDC coming out of the new main control: then I’d look closely at the replacement main board, its installation/configuration, and incoming power.

One important detail

For your GDT655SGJ0BB, the current UI listed is WD21X31902C.

Replacement UI boards on this family also require the personality/jumper configuration to be set correctly for the model; an incorrectly configured UI may not operate properly.

So based on what you’ve described, my order of suspicion would be:

1. UI control board → 2. door wiring harness → 3. new main control board defective/incorrect → 4. incoming power/wiring issue.

The fact that replacing the main board fixed it several years ago doesn’t necessarily mean today’s failure is the same board. The UI and main board communicate with each other, and a dead UI can make the dishwasher appear completely powerless.

If you tell me whether the green LED on your new main control is OFF, steady ON, or blinking (and approximately how fast), I can narrow this down considerably before you buy another part.

Thanks for responding Jeffrey. I unplugged the plug to the control board and exposed the control board. I then plugged the plug back in to the board. The LED you mentioned is blinking every 2-3 seconds. In addition, the upper control panel is now lit up which was not the case before I opened this issue with you yesterday. Advice?

For the GDT655SGJ0BB, the service documentation gives these patterns:

  • 1 blink about every 3 seconds → control is alive; dishwasher is sitting idle/not running.
  • 2 blinks within each 3-second period → Delay Start.
  • 3 blinks within 3 seconds → cycle running.
  • 4 blinks within 3 seconds → paused.
  • 7 blinks within 3 seconds → Current Sense Module (CSM) tripped.
  • 1 blink every second → communication lost between the main board and UI.
  • Rapid flashing (~4/sec) → main-control software fault.

So if what you’re seeing is literally one quick green blink, then roughly 2–3 seconds off, then one blink again, that’s actually a good sign: the main control board has power and is running. It would make me look upstream toward the UI/control panel, door-latch circuit, or communication wiring, depending on the original symptom.

Count the flashes this way: watch it for about 10 seconds. Tell me whether it’s one blink → pause → one blink, or multiple quick blinks → pause → repeats. That will narrow this down considerably

Does the controls light up? Have you tried to run a test cycle?

Originally, dishwasher controls did not light up even with a new main control board.

After exposing main control board and reconnecting power, LED light was blinking every 3 seconds, the dishwasher controls lit up, and the diswasher ran a complete cycle. Not sure why it is working now. Will it continue to work?

Another thing is you mentioned the part number of the control board is WD21X31902C. The board I purchased is WD21X24901C if that makes any difference.

The number I gave was the user interface board. Sometimes just reseating the plugin is all that’s needed to correct any issue

I failed to thank you for your assistance over the last several days. Thank you Jeffrey.

That’s what we’re here for

I’m back again Jeffrey. After our last conversation, I ran a load of dishes. The machine performed as normal and the control panel lit up each time the door was opened to load dishes in the days after. Today I tried to run the machine and the control panel was dead. The LED light on the lower control board is on continuously. No blinking.

For the GE GDT655SGJ0BB, GE’s service guide specifically covers this model family, and the green LED on the lower machine control is a good diagnostic indicator.

Rapid flashing — about 4 flashes per second

This one is straightforward:

Rapid flashing = software error in the main machine control.

GE’s diagnostic instruction is to replace the main control (MC).

Before replacing it, I would still:

  1. Turn the breaker OFF for about 5 minutes.
  2. Reseat all connectors on the main control.
  3. Inspect for moisture, corrosion, burnt terminals, or damaged wiring.
  4. Restore power and verify approximately 120 VAC is reaching the main control.
  5. If the LED immediately returns to ~4 flashes per second, replace the main machine control.

Steady green LED — don’t automatically replace the main board

On this model, steady ON has a different meaning:

UI personality not set OR communication has been lost between the UI and main control.

So with a steady LED, I would diagnose the UI communication circuit before replacing the main board.

Turn power OFF and reseat the connectors at both the lower main control and the UI board in the door. Closely inspect the door harness, especially anywhere it bends or passes through the bottom of the door.

Then check the UI supply.

GE’s diagnostic information shows approximately 13.5 VDC supplied to the UI.

Live Power Warning: You’re working around exposed 120 VAC while making this measurement.

At the UI, check J401 pin 1 to pin 2:

  • ~13.5 VDC present + UI dead → UI board is the primary suspect.
  • No 13.5 VDC at UI → check the door harness between the main control and UI.
  • Voltage leaving main control but not reaching UI → harness/connector problem.
  • No UI supply leaving the main control → main control becomes the suspect.

Also verify that a replacement UI has its personality configuration/jumpers set correctly for this model. A personality problem is specifically one of the conditions that can produce a steady service LED.

Quick LED cheat sheet for GDT655SGJ0BB

The GE service manual gives these patterns:

  • 1 blink / 3 sec → idle/normal
  • 2 blinks / 3 sec → Delay Start
  • 3 blinks / 3 sec → cycle running
  • 4 blinks / 3 sec → paused
  • 7 blinks / 3 sec → CSM tripped
  • 1 blink every second → communication lost between boards
  • Rapid ~4 flashes/secmain-control software error; replace main control
  • Steady OFF → no power to control or failed main control
  • Steady ONUI personality not set or UI/main-control communication lost

So I would not group rapid flashing and steady ON together on the GDT655SGJ0BB. Rapid flashing points directly toward the main control, while steady ON calls for checking the UI configuration, UI board, and door harness/communication circuit first.
