GE Cooktop 1 stove not clicking

Hello,
I am trying to diagnose what the problem is with my cooktop in a newly purchased house. It is a GE cooktop model jgp636bed1bb.
The problem is that one of the burners does not light up.
Normally I have to turn the knob to “Lite” which starts the clicking and when the knob is turned further gas is introduced to produce a flame.
The problem burner does not produce the clicking sound when the knob is turned to “Lite” on its control but the gas is introduced normally.

So, I’m trying to figure out why this particular burner does not “click.”
I went to a local appliance shop and I was told that it could be the igniter, but I don’t think that is the case because when I remove the igniters on all the burners, the working burners still “click” and the problem one does not.

I am thinking that it is the spark switch for that particular burner that needs replacement but I’d like to get some feedback from you guys.
Would this ( the harness switch for Model JGP636BED1BB ) do the job?

Thanks in advance

When you turn the knob to ignite, does the other burners start to click? If so, Scratch the top of the ignitor to clean it up, if that does not work, remove the ignitor, and check the wire connected to it, you may be losing the spark underneath. Simple and free things to try before spending money. If the other burners click when you turn the knob in question, chances are the switch is fine, and doing the above should fix it, If none of the burners click when turning the questionable knob, the switch is bad

Each burner has its own knob. There are 5 burners and 5 knobs. 4 burners work and their knobs click but the fifth knob does not click.

What do I need to do to make the problem knob click?

what I’m trying to find out is if you turn the knob in question on, do the other burners click.

No, the other burners don’t click when the problem knob is turned.

Thanks for helping me out with this situation.

I would say it is your switch for that burner, if no other burners click when that knob is turned on, that is your problem

It looks like I have to replace all of the switches using the “harness switch” part #AP3784034.
Thanks again for your input.

correct, if you need help installing, let us know

I have same issue with cooktop stove, one burner does not ignite

What is the complete model number of the stove? Which burner is not lighting?

Hi Harpreet,

I have the exact same model and same problem. My fifth (rightmost) one is the problem. Can you tell me how you opened the Glass Maintop to replace the harness switch? I already unscrewed the two holddown brackets underneath and felt some movements but I was unable to lift the glass top  using the pry bars. I know that it has some kind of adhesive strips to hold down the whole thing but I could not figure out how to open the glass top. Are there any other screws/brackets you have to remove? Also, did you have to unattach the gas pipe?

Any insight/instruction would be very much appreciated.:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks,
CC.

I can’t figure out how to do it. How do I remove the top where the controls are? I removed the knobs and I don’t see how to remove the protective cover. I removed the cooktop mostly from the counter and I can see a couple of screws on the fron - will this allow access to the harness?

That is the problem. I did not see any other screws other than the two that hold down the whole unit from underneath. I could feel that the whole unit is a little bit loose but could not lift the glass. I was afraid of breaking it if there were other screws or something.
I don’t know how Harpreet could do it. I tried to search all the place on the internet but could not find any instruction.

Anyone can help, please do…

Thank you!!!

CyberCrawler and avanvale,

What are the model numbers of your stoves?

Hi Gene,
Thank you so much for your reply. The model I have is GE JGP636BED1BB (Gas)

Thanks,
CC

I have a GE JGP963SEC2SS …but I think I figured it out. I have to take the burners out first. Each burner has two screws. I need to remove all five burners and then the entire stainless steel will come off?

CC,

You have to remove all burners and there are two screws under each burner. Remove them and all knobs to remove the glass top. As you can see on the diagram, there is a double side tape which secures the glass top to the burner box. You have to cut it using a sharp blade.

Hi Gene and Avanvaler,

Thank you very much for sharing and the instructions:) . I saw the two screws for each burner. I will try them tonight. One question: as Gene mentioned that there is a double-sided tape to secure the glass to the box. After I cut it with the sharp knife, should I replace it? Is it called “foam tape” (number 199 on the diagram, part# AP2016094) or “tape foam” (number 200 on the diagram, part# AP2634968) ?

Again, thank you both very much.
CC

CC,

I believe this is the same tape and difference between these two part numbers is only length of tape. I’m not sure how long exactly they are.

It’s better to have it, but this is not a critical issue as long as you have not removed the old tape.
