Gas smell after oven use but no leak detected

Hello,

For awhile now we have been noticing a gas smell sometimes after using the oven part of our stove. We notice the smell a few hours after we’re done using the oven. Usually if we use the oven for dinner, we’ll notice the smell late that same night or the next day (after we get home from work). We’ve narrowed it down and will only smell gas after using the oven part of the stove, not the burners. However, the gas smell isn’t consistent and we don’t smell it every time after using the oven. At first we thought maybe we weren’t turning the knobs completely off, but since then we’ve been very good about making sure they’re completely off.

We had Sears Appliance Repair come out to our house and they checked everything about the stove, but could not find a leak. We also borrowed a gas detector from my father’s work (he’s an industrial hygienist) and still did not find a leak, even after smelling gas.

If we turn off the gas to the stove (at the wall), we do not smell gas. We also called our gas/electric utility company and they suggested that it might be a problem with the pipes and to call a heating/cooling contractor. However, we really think that it is a problem with the stove/oven and not the pipes because we only smell gas after using the oven. I would think if the problem was with the pipes, if the gas was left on we would smell gas consistently, which is not the case.

So anyways, we’re unsure of what to do. I guess our next step would be to buy a new stove, but we’re hesitant to do that since the oven itself is fairly new (about 5 years old). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

If the gas leak can not be detected with a special equipment then it could be: a) a very small leak which can not be detected and fixed or b) something else smells like gas. It is very hard to recommend anything in such situation.

Hi.

I am experiencing the exact same issue. Is it possible that some control mechanism or valve is not closing completely when the oven knob is turned to the off position?

I have a old kenmore that was in this house when I bought 9 years ago.

Dan,

Everything is possible. Without proper diagnosis it’s just a guessing. Have you called a local gas company to detect and pinpoint the leak?

For those who will come to this thread: Yeah, for gas leak problems you should definitely call a gas company, not appliance repair company.
We called appliance repair company when we had problems with oven gas and they said to call gas company. So, dont waste your time waiting for appliance repair technician to show up to fix it.
