Brand: Frigidaire Model Number: fg4h2272uf Main Symptom: Front panel/display failure What happens & when:
The front panel on this Figidaire Gallery no longer displays after brownouts. Unable to control temp, dispense water, or dispense ice. No beeps, no response, no lights, nothing. After research it seemed that the correct part to replace was the refrigerator control board, 5304531885. Received the part today and swapped, but that did not fix the issue. In fact, it may have made it worse.
The display still doesn’t work, none of the internal LED lights function (when they did before the swap), and the temp control buttons on the middle drawer (for drinks, etc) no longer function (they did before the swap). The adjusting temp light is now on for this middle drawer.
I put the original control board back in with the same, worse results. The problem is now I’m not sure what temperature the fridge is adjusting to. Higher, lower? It hasn’t been long enough since the swap to notice any change.
That sounds like either the display board 5304528575 in the front of the left door has failed and is dragging on the system or the display board 5304531769 in the top of the middle drawer.
You may be able to disconnect the one in the middle drawer with the unit powered off and leave it disconnected when you power the fridge back on to see if everything starts working. If it doesn’t I would suspect the display board in the front of the left door.
Display board 5304526795 is similar to 5304528575, but the manufacturer lists 5304528575 as the one for this model.
Well, trying to figure out what’s happening was a bust. I couldn’t figure out how to get into the middle drawer guts. I think that secondary to the rest of what’s going on though.
The fridge isn’t cooling at all after I swapped out the control boards. Currently, the original board is installed.
We did test the left door wiring harness for continuity and found that the two red wires going from the top of the door and then exiting at the touch panel (I think) have none. Either the red wires at the touch panel aren’t those I see going in (which I doubt) or the one that plugs into the panel itself has an issue.
We tried removing the wiring harness because it might be bad and couldn’t get it to budge. The water line removes easily though. Also, from what I can tell, there is no way to get into the left door. Looking at the diagram doesn’t lead me anywhere and I can’t find anything online stating it can be done. I also can’t find a wiring harness to purchase, so it may not matter.
My wife found a few people online mentioning that the rear control panel and the touch panel must be replaced together. Something about them not being programmed together. They had the same symptoms my fridge has and nothing worked until they replaced both. I don’t have the links to share.
I’ve ordered the replacement touch panel you linked and that should be here Monday or Tuesday.
My son had a day off school and decided he’d troubleshoot the fridge. He was able to get a little bit of slack in the wiring harness before it enters the door from the top. With it plugged in, he’d wiggle the harness and the touch panel would temporarily display ER CE. So, it does look like it’s the harness. Probably the red wire we couldn’t get a read on.
Turns out there are three cut wires in the harness: two red and one black. One red and the black go to the switch activated by the flap on the left-hand door. This appears to operate the LEDs in the fridge section. I found this by removing the flap, which exposed the cut wires.
The other red wire, I assume, goes to the front control panel.
So, without a new harness (which appears to be unavailable, more on this in a second) I’m sunk.
I decided to dissect the door to see if the harness is replaceable; it isn’t. I’m guessing, but the manufacture process doesn’t allow it. They filled the door with expanding foam after the internals were in place and placed the interior wall before the foam set up. This glues everything together. I’ve tried cutting through the seam between the two main pieces and just can’t get anywhere. My intention was to open the door up and splice the broken wires. It’s just not possible without severe plastic surgery!
So, in order for this expensive fridge to be any good, more than likely I’ll have to buy a new door… which doesn’t appear to be in stock with most reputable appliance part stores. I wonder why, hmmmm! Maybe because it’s a known issue for tons of people.
Hopefully Frigidaire has fixed this harness issue with new doors. I don’t see how this hasn’t been recalled with all of the online posts I’ve read.
