Fridge and freezer not cooling correctly

I noticed the other night that my milk seemed warmer than usual, then I opened my freezer to discover that the ice cream was almost completely melted. I removed the ice cream and most of the other items in my freezer to my deep-freeze. I ended up leaving a container of cool whip in the freezer (it wasn’t frozen anymore either) and them moved my appliance away from the wall. I didn’t know what I was looking for, but I moved it anyway. The following morning I checked the fridge and it was back to a normal temperature, so I checked the freezer and the cool whip was frozen again. I then moved my refrigerator back against the wall. Tonight it was getting warmer again so I moved it away from the wall again, and now it seems like it’s cooling down again. Any suggestions as to what’s going on?

Was the compressor running when it stopped cooling?
Usually you can hear it, also you should be able to feel it vibrating and it should be warm.

Was the condenser/compressor fan running?
Are the condenser coils clean?
Are the front and rear vents clean?

If the compressor was off it could be a thermostat problem.
Thermostats can stick open and when you moved the unit it may have jarred it enough to un-stick it. When it happens again just move the thermostat back and forth (not to off). If the compressor fires up I would replace the thermostat.
