Freezer on GE profile has temp fluctuations

My GE profile refrigerator started having temp fluctuations mainly in the freezer compartment only. It’s most noticeable in the upper shelves and mainly in the icemaker. The ice will go from hard frozen for a few days to melting for a couple of days. water will then drip out of the ice tray and create icicles. The freezer temp reading on the door will go from -7 to 1 or 2 degrees but it has to be getting warmer in the icemaker to allow for melting. What could be the problem and what is the average cost of repair?

Did you have any problems in the refrigerator compartment?

No. The refrigerator seems to hold a constant temp. It’s only the freezer that is fluctuating.

Locate the 3-way valve on the back of the refrigerator (#988 on the diagram). Disconnect the refrigerator from power for about a minute, place a finger on top of the valve, and reconnect power. You should be able to feel the valve vibrate as the coil moves the magnet to the home position.

Post the results.

P.S. Make sure the fan inside the freezer works properly.

Do I have to take the mother board out to access the valve?

Can’t seem to find this valve. Do you have to remove anything to get to it? I did unplug and plug the power in and the fridge made a fan noise and about 4 knocks and then the fan noise stopped in about 5 seconds.

The only what you have to remove is the cover for the machine compartment on the bottom. It is also a good idea to clean the condenser coils while the cover is removed.

Did you check the evaporator fan (inside the freezer)?

Still can’t see this valve. Is it next to the condenser? I did clean the condenser.
Where is the evaporator fan inside the freezer? I don’t really ever hear a fan running when I open the freezer.

If the evaporator fan does not work then forget about valve. This fan is the culprit. The fan motor has to be replaced together with the main control board.

The instructions are attached to the reply.
