Is the freezer failing to reach proper temperature or is the entire appliance not cooling?

It completely thaws. The refrigeator stays cool, but to a lesser degree than normal, probably.

Are the warm temperatures consistent or does the freezer cool down to temperature and then climb back up in temperature?

After the reset, it functioned perfectly, making ice, etc, freezing food solid. The freezer then thawed overnight, in the AM everything in the freezer only slightly cool.

This is going to be a failure in the defrost timer or the cold control thermostat. From what it sounds like, a contact is sticking in the off position. When the freezer starts warming up again, the defrost timer and thermostat can be accessed to test the thermostat. With a multimeter, test from the gray wire to the white wire for Volts AC. If 120 Volts AC is present during the temperature failure and nothing is running, the defrost timer contact is sticking. If there is not 120 Volts AC, the thermostat has failed. Thank you, very helpful!

Follow up question: the cold control thermostat you are referring to is the freezer thermostat, correct? We open that from inside the freezer compartment, presumably.

As for the defrost timer, we get to that thru the rear of the refrigerator?

Thanks again.

The cold control/freezer thermostat is the intended part to be tested. All testing would be conducted in the refrigerator section after accessing the defrost timer located in the light housing between the two lights.

OK, we did that. Looks like the problem was the compressor, whcih went up to 7-8 amps and kept kicking off. Is there a compressor available for this unit? Would much prefer to replace that than et a new refrigerator . . .

It looks like the compressor is still being manufactured as seen in the following link. However, installing it requires an EPA certified technician. W10309990 Compressor | Genuine Whirlpool OEM In Stock
